about bbrd

Bedford Bandits Roller Derby League was founded in June 2007 after learning about the sport from fellow roller girl Hope n Gory of Central City Rollergirls and having nowhere to skate locally. Being a relatively new sport making a big impact on the UK after a resurgence in the US, it was high time that Bedfordshire had a league of it's own and so Bedford Bandits Roller Derby League was born.

Bedford Bandits are a female only flat track roller derby league aiming for national/international competition within the next year while providing an opportunity for women to participate in a team sport that builds self discipline, athletic ability and sportsmanship.

what is roller derby anyway?

  • Two teams of five skaters (a jammer, a pivot and three blockers) battle it out around an oval track blocking the opposing team's jammer from breaking through the pack to gain points while helping their own jammer to progress. Each game, or bout, lasts for two periods of twenty minutes each, which are broken up into two minute long jams.

  • Pivots are the skaters at the front of the pack wearing striped helmets. They set the pace and can call plays to the team. They are the last line of defence to stop an opposing team member scoring.

  • Jammers are the skaters at the back of the pack wearing starred helmets. They work their way through the pack scoring points as they pass members of the opposing team.

  • Blockers form the pack between the pivots and jammers and keep a tight formation to try to stop the jammer from the opposing team from getting through to score points while at the same time helping their own jammer to pass.

recruiting now!

Lady with a fun attitude? Over 18? Reasonable physical shape? Not afraid of a few bumps and bruises? Looking for a fun way to keep fit, have fun and make some fantastic new friends?

It doesn't matter if you haven't skated before or you haven't put skates on since you were a kid- we'll teach you the basics and get you rolling. A positive attitude, willingness to learn and a pair of skates is all you need. We are also looking for referees, score keepers, announcers and anyone interested in helping us organise events.

Check out the chat link to the right- there may be a rollergirl logged in to answer any questions you might  have!

what do I need to do to join?

  • Drop us a line at info@bedfordbandits.com to find out the next training dates and times. Come along to watch or join in if you are feeling brave. Training fees are £5 for a two hour session.

  • To begin with you'll need just a pair of skates. We skate on quads, but in-lines will do to get you rolling. Don't worry if you don't have any experience, we will teach basic skating skills too.

  • If you find you like the sport and want to get more involved, you will need a complete set of pads- helmet, mouth guard, knee and elbow pads and wrist protectors. This is a full contact sport and you are skating at your own risk so do the sensible thing and pad up.
