welcome

Welcome to the home of Bedford Bandits Roller Derby League on the web! We are Bedfordshire's only all woman flat track roller derby league formed in June 2007. Our aim is to build a team of strong, well rounded female athletes that are able to compete in the national and even international arena while promoting the sport of Roller Derby in the UK and fostering the spirit of the Derby sisterhood. Have fun nosing around our website- check out the forum for training schedules, events and general chit chat, but then have even more fun by padding up, strapping on some skates and coming to join us!

what is roller derby anyway?

  • Two teams of five skaters (a jammer, a pivot and three blockers) battle it out around an oval track blocking the opposing team's jammer from breaking through the pack to gain points while helping their own jammer to progress. Each game, or bout, lasts for two periods of twenty minutes each, which are broken up into two minute long jams.

  • Pivots are the skaters at the front of the pack wearing striped helmets. They set the pace and can call plays to the team. They are the last line of defence to stop an opposing team member scoring.

  • Jammers are the skaters at the back of the pack wearing starred helmets. They work their way through the pack scoring points as they pass members of the opposing team.

  • Blockers form the pack between the pivots and jammers and keep a tight formation to try to stop the jammer from the opposing team from getting through to score points while at the same time helping their own jammer to pass.
